Surveys and Mapping resource
Coordinates and other metadata of the Trigonometrical Beacons and Town Survey Marks of the National Control Survey Network of South Africa have always been vital to land surveyors and other practitioners and thus far have only been available as coordinates in ASCII format. Google Earth is increasingly becoming a useful tool for visualizing and analysing spatial data. These coordinates were obtained from Chief Directorate: Surveys and Mapping (November 2008) and converted to a format (kml) that can immediately be read into Google Earth.
*Please note: The coordinates were obtained from Chief Directorate: Surveys and Mapping in November 2008. Changes to the coordinates or the status of the point might occur since then. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that no changes have occurred if wishing to utilize the coordinate embedded in the metadata.

*Note on Google Earth Imagery
Please note that the positional accuracy of imagery on Google Earth can be as bad as 50m in some areas. This will cause the Trig Beacons and TSM's to appear in the wrong place. The reason for this is that Google imagery are not accurately geo-referenced.

Trigs preview in Google Earth

Here you can download a zip file (RSATrigsGoogle.zip) containing all of the trig beacons in South Africa. The files have been divided into 1 degree square blocks. Please unzip this file to a folder and double click on the relevant degree square.

Town Survey Marks : http://sites.google.com/site/trigandtsm/Home/town-survey-marks

Here you can download a zip file (RSATSMsGoogle.zip ) containing individual kml files that have been divided into the town survey marks scheme, allowing you to open the file for your specific town. Please unzip this file to a folder and double click on the Town Survey Mark Scheme.

Map Sheet Reference : http://sites.google.com/site/trigandtsm/Home/map-sheets

If you are unsure which degree square to use, download and open (MapSheets.kmz), which will display the divisions.
